Chakra History Overview

The knowledge and teachings on the Chakras come from yoga - the oldest system addressing the development of the whole person. Yoga is a philosophical system and meditative practice directed towards the mastery of one’s body and mind. It is at least 5000 years old.

The goal of yoga is liberation from suffering and union with one’s divine self. Many yogis who have devoted themselves to this practice for many years develop extraordinary power. But…the ultimate significance of the physical and spiritual practice of yoga lies in recognition of one’s higher self.

Although we have the yoga tradition to thank for transmitting the teaching on the Chakras, the phenomenon of the Chakras has been recognized in many other cultures as well. The first reference to Chakras is found in the Vedas, the most ancient religious texts of India, which dated from around 1500 B.C.

Chakras are the centers of awareness in the human body. These energy centers are neither physical nor anatomical. They are found in the subtle energy system, although their radiant energy does correspond to positions within the body.
The Chakras influence cells, organs, and the entire hormone system and affect one’s thoughts and feelings. They are also centers of psychic energy. The term Chakra comes from Sanskrit, the sacred language of ancient India. It literally means “wheel” or “turning”. In fact, the Chakras revolve continuously. Through their rotation, they absorb energies from without and convert them into the subtle material of the astral body. Through the Chakras, we take in energy from our surroundings. Thus the Chakras serve as kind of a way station in which energy is collected, transmitted and made available for the ongoing processes of an individual’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual life. One can thereby make a positive impression in the world and influence one’s surroundings for the better. The Chakras also promote harmony between one’s inner and outer worlds.

Chakra work is one of the subtlest methods of healing. They are important energy centers in the body and can be activated and harmonized using certain techniques. This will lead to marked improvements in the physical and mental health, psychological stability, and inner peace.
